Earn Your Open Water Scuba Certification

The Open Water Scuba course gives students the necessary knowledge and training to dive with an equally or more qualified dive buddy, in conditions and environments equivalent to their training, in depths not exceeding 18 meters/60 feet.

Cozumel is one of the world’s best places to learn to scuba dive. With its crystal-clear waters, abundance of spectacular marine life and a pristine reef system, our island is the ideal place to develop the skills you need to dive safely around the world.

Students younger than 12 years old will only be certified to a maximum depth of 12 meters/40 feet.

Components of the Open Water Certification Class

The Open Water certification course consists of three phases; knowledge development, a confined water training session to learn basic scuba skills and four open water dives. Our flexible schedule allows students to complete the course at a speed which suits them. This gives students plenty of time to practice their new skills before earning their certification.

To get your Open Water Scuba certification you must be at least 10 years old and be able to swim. Students younger than 15 will be certified as Junior Open Water Divers and must dive under the supervision of a dive professional or with a certified adult in conditions and environments equivalent to their dive training.  Students younger than 12 years old will only be certified to a maximum depth of 12 meters/40 feet.

Typical SSI or PADI Open Water Diver Certification Course Schedule

  • Virtual classroom e-Learning completed prior to arrival
  • Morning  One ~ 8:30am – 1pm… Brief review of knowledge and in the pool for skills
  • Lunch 1pm – 2pm
  • Afternoon One ~ 2:30pm – 5:30pm… in the ocean for dives 1 & 2
  • Morning Two ~  In the classroom or pool (if needed)
  • Afternoon Two ~ 1:30pm – 6pm… in the ocean for dives 3 & 4
  • You are a Certified Open Water SCUBA Diver!

At Salty Endeavors we offer the Open Water Diver Certification course through both SSI and PADI. All SSI course materials are digital and free of charge. PADI eLearning manuals will incur additional fees.

Private Pool for Training

Our private swimming pool reaches a maximum depth of 2 meters/6.5 feet and functions as the ideal place to take your first breathes underwater. The environment is ideal for learning on many levels – comfortable atmosphere, zero distractions, and zero currents. Here your instructor will teach you over 20 skills which are paramount in your evolution as a certified Open Water Diver.
